Adoption Center Front Desk Attendant

Status: PT

Schedule: 25-29 hours weekly typically working 12-6.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Front Desk Attendant is responsible for greeting guests as they enter the adoption center in a friendly and welcoming manner while offering assistance to all guests. This position must support all BRHS board policies.

Including but not limited to:

  • Responsible for assisting with donation drop-offs
  •  Responsible for maintaining the front desk and lobby area in a clean and organized condition
  • Provide general information support by answering phone & voicemails, and assist the Adoption Coordinator in replying to general inbox inquiries as necessary
  • Process animal adoptions, returns to owners, and transfers, ensuring all transaction paperwork and computer records are complete and accurate
  • Counsel adopters to assist in their selection of a new animal, and complete adoption paperwork with adopters when taking a new animal home
  • Responsible for assisting guests in the kennel and cattery looking to adopt an animal
  • Must maintain a humane attitude at all times towards the animals in their care
  • Responsible for observing and documenting signs of animal stress, injury, or illness
  • Ability to multitask and tolerate a fast paced and often times stressful environment
  • Must show interest and motivation towards personal development, growth and learning with regards to animal welfare; this includes seminars/trainings and some extra reading and preparations
  • Responsible for training new staff as needed
  • Work cooperatively with volunteers in partnership to improve quality of life for resident animals; report all concerns or issues with volunteers immediately to supervisor
  • Participate in adoption and community outreach events when assigned
  • Represent Blue Ridge Humane Society at industry meeting or community initiatives when assigned
  • Represent Blue Ridge Humane Society in a professional and friendly manner at all times: in appearance, demeanor and following the behavior expectations for an Animal Care Attendant
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Must be knowledgeable about proper handling and restraint of animals
  • Must demonstrate a high level of attendance and punctuality as a condition of continued employment

  • Strong organizational and customer service skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to function as part of a team and work with volunteers
  • Ability to physically perform the essential job functions
  • Highly motivated and self-directed
  • Must be able to regularly lift or move heavy objects up to 50 lb.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population and establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with the public, donors, volunteers, staff and management in a respectful and courteous manner
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Good judgment when dealing with the public, decision making, and dealing with confidential information. Ability to effectively handle difficult interpersonal situations, including tactfully handling of angry and upset individuals when necessary

Animal Care Attendant

Status: PT

Animal Care Attendants are responsible for the daily care of the animals waiting for adoption. Main duties include cleaning, feeding, and basic care and enrichment of the animals as well as providing excellent customer service to the general public and volunteers. The ideal candidate has excellent interpersonal skills, is highly motivated, organized and detail-oriented, and likes working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The ability to juggle multiple demands and work collaboratively is critical. Candidates should feel comfortable driving a cargo van.

Schedule is twenty four hours weekly with opportunity to grow. Candidates must be able to work a flexible shift to include some weekends and holidays. This position requires the ability to life at least 50 pounds to a level of at least 4 feet high and have the ability to work continually in a fast-paced environment for an eight-hour day.

This position requires:

  • Experience handling all types of animals
  • Basic computer skills
  • A valid and unrestricted driver’s license and be able to obtain coverage under organization’s insurance carrier
  • Ability to multi-task and work on own initiative
  • Ability to meet deadlines and balance multiple projects
  • Ability to maintain composure and professional conduct during stressful situations
