Thank you for choosing training classes at Blue Ridge Humane Society! You and your dog will both have fun as you learn new skills, gain a new appreciation for how your dog’s mind works, and reap the rewards of positive training.

Puppy Head Start

Class will cover puppy essentials like house-training, chew training, and bite inhibition. We’ll also build a foundation for polite greetings and other good manners. You’ll learn about socialization and how to give your puppy positive experiences with other dogs, people, scents, sounds, and surfaces so she’ll grow up to be a confident, friendly companion. Find out what you should be doing now to give your pup the best start.

Who: Puppies 8 to 16 weeks of age and their humans

Cost of Class: $75 for 6 visits (must be completed by 16 weeks of age)

Prerequisites: Two sets of vaccinations, or your veterinarian’s approval

First Things First

Does your dog have a hard time listening in distracting environments? This one hour workshop will cover techniques you can use to get, and keep, your dog’s attention. You’ll leave better prepared to handle exciting situations and keep your dog focused on you.

Who: Dogs 6 months of age and older as well as their humans

Cost of Workshop: $15 donation

Prerequisites: Current vaccinations

Manners 101

Have fun with your dog as you learn basic skills that will make him a well-mannered companion. Class will cover attention, sit, down, stay, targeting, relaxing on a mat, as well as foundations for polite greetings and leash manners. Training in a positive, rewarding way will help you get the results you and your dog want.

Who: Dogs 6 months of age and older as well as their humans

Cost of Class: $75 for 6 weeks

Prerequisites: Current vaccinations, First Things First workshop, attend a Manners 101 Orientation (Please leave your canine friend at home for the initial orientation session)

Class Requirements

  • You must have had your dog for at least 10 days prior to the first class.
  • Current on Distemper, Parvo, and Bordatella (kennel cough) vaccinations.
  • Bordatella vaccination, if not currently vaccinated, should be given 10 days before start of class.
  • Bring vaccination records to the first class.
  • Free from all parasites (worms, fleas, ticks, etc)

Class Policies

  • Schedule is subject to change.
  • We reserve the right to excuse from class or decline entry to any person or dog who presents behavior that may be dangerous or disruptive.
  • Harsh training methods will not be tolerated.
  • In order to keep class size small and provide the best instruction to each participant, payment is required to guarantee your place in class. In addition, no refunds will be given after class registration is completed and no “make up” classes will be scheduled.
  • Children over the age of 10 are welcome in class with a parent or guardian. Please contact the instructor before bringing children under the age of 10 to class.
  • If you have questions whether your dog’s fearful or aggressive tendencies are a good fit for class, please contact our Behavior and Training Manager to discuss your options at behavior@blueridgehumane.org.
