Why we don’t judge any animal by its breed…

If you’ve visited our shelter recently, you may have noticed that the breed labels are missing from our dog’s kennel cards. This is no accident! Most dogs that come into shelters are of mixed descent, and we typically do not know the specific genetic make-up of a particular dog or puppy. Research and DNA testing has confirmed that visual identification is subjective, and inaccurate around 50%-75% of the time. Furthermore, it says nothing reliable about the dog’s personality or behavior! We hope that by removing breed labels, we open up a deeper conversation and encourage adopters to consider each dog as an individual, rather than an arbitrary breed designation. Check out this informative, interesting article explaining further why more and more shelters are choosing to do away with breed labels altogether!
