Henderson County Adopts Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return Initiative

After years of conversations, education, collaboration, and persistence in advocacy, Henderson County has officially adopted a Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) initiative – a HUGE win for feral cats in our community! 

The Henderson County Board of Commissioners voted to approve the initiative on July 15th, marking a significant milestone for animal welfare in Henderson County. This decision followed years of discussion and collaboration among the Henderson County Animal Services Advisory Committee, the Henderson County Health Department, the Henderson County Board of Commissioners, and local animal welfare organizations and advocates.  

The adoption of TNVR will make a meaningful difference for thousands of community cats throughout Henderson County. TNVR is a humane approach to managing community cat populations by trapping cats, having them spayed or neutered and vaccinated, and returning them to their outdoor homes. This will help to stabilize cat colony populations, improve the health of the community, and reduce the number of cats and kittens entering local shelters.  

We’re currently working through the details of how this initiative will move forward and what implementation will look like in the coming months. Additional information will be shared as those plans are finalized.  

In the meantime, residents who are caring for community cats can continue to access existing resources like our Spay and Neuter Incentive Program.
